Women’s Empowerment through Sindhi Handicrafts

Anosha Nangraj, a senior-year undergraduate student majoring in Social Development and Policy at Habib University, completed her capstone project titled:

“Threads of Sindhi Heritage: Women Artisans and Social Capital in SRSO’s Crafts Program.”

This project was conducted in collaboration with the Sindh Rural Support Organization (SRSO) and focused on analyzing the social capital of women artisans associated with SRSO. Using qualitative methods, primarily in-depth interviews, Anosha examined the changes in women’s social and economic positions before and after joining the SRSO crafts program.

The data revealed that women who had pre-existing skills in traditional handicrafts were professionally trained by SRSO to meet contemporary market demands. This not only enhanced their craftsmanship but also expanded economic opportunities for them. As a result, many of these women are now actively engaged in income-generating activities, leading to a positive shift in household decision-making dynamics, especially in terms of improving the lifestyle and educational opportunities for their daughters.

The capstone was submitted at Habib University and received the highest grade, recognized for its academic rigor, fieldwork quality, and social relevance.
